ssomac is accelerating its global strategy to support Italian companies in strategic markets. First stops: Chennai and Hong Kong.
Despite a complex geopolitical landscape, Italian technology for the footwear, leather goods, and tanning sectors remains a global benchmark. With the launch of the “Assomac Around the World” program, the Association is deploying a targeted strategy to guide “Made in Italy” excellence into the world’s fastest-growing industrial hubs.
Key Markets for 2026: Focus on India
The global tour debuted in Chennai (February 1-3) at the 39th edition of the India International Leather Fair (IILF). India currently represents a vital frontier for the industry:
-
World’s second-largest footwear producer.
-
Leather sector value: Estimated at €19.6 billion in 2025, with a target of €43.5 billion by 2030.
-
Italian Presence: Italy is the second-largest supplier of machinery to India, holding a 17.2% market share.
At the Italian National Pavilion (organized in collaboration with ITA – Italian Trade Agency), over 60 Italian companies showcased their latest innovations, confirming the high demand for Italian technology among Asian manufacturers.
“To compete globally, a collective vision is essential. Now is the time to build alliances, shared commercial plans, and international networks.” — Agostino Apolito, Director General of Assomac.
Challenges and Export Opportunities
The sector is navigating a period of adjustment: in the period of January-October 2025, exports saw a contraction of 12.2%. However, international expansion remains the primary engine of the system:
-
Institutional Support: The role of the Italian Trade Agency is central to maintaining global visibility.
-
Strategic Agreements: New developments in the EU-India Free Trade Agreement are opening favorable scenarios for new investments.
-
Sustainable Innovation: Italian technology stands out for customization and sustainability—key drivers for modern global markets.
Upcoming Stops: The International Calendar
The “Assomac Around the World” roadmap extends far beyond India. The strategy to secure market presence will continue across major global hubs:
-
March 2026: APLF Leather – Hong Kong.
-
Followed by: Targeted missions in Southeast Asia and Latin America.
