Weave and innovation: the human touch returns to digital luxury

ILW: strategic investment to turbo-charge luxury sampling turnaround

International Leather Weavings Srl, was founded in 2015 by Leonardo Lami, and embodies the perfect fusion of over two decades of leather goods expertise and the ambitious drive to project the ancient art of weaving into a contemporary, luxury landscape. Launched in Albania and rapidly evolving with the relocation of its main headquarters to Tuscany, the company has become a pivotal strategic partner for international luxury brands. Specializing in the artisanal production of footwear, handbags, and small leather goods, International Leather Weavings marries manual excellence with advanced technology, such as automated cutting tables, to produce premium semi-finished materials. Operating across two production hubs, in Italy and Albania, and certified SA 8000:2014, the firm ensures stringent quality control, operational agility, and a robust commitment to social responsibility. The year 2025 is set for a significant transformation and consolidation, as the company has dramatically accelerated its structural expansion, boldly meeting market demands that require unprecedented speed of execution.
The reinforcement of the Italian headquarters is the key element in this evolution. “2025 is a critical year: we have expanded our Italian base, evolving from a coordination office into a full production facility,” states founder Leonardo Lami. The Tuscan location has been transformed from a simple administrative space into a vital operational hub. “Today, we are a fully functional company with 18 staff in Italy, a 600-square- metre facility, and state-of-the-art machinery, including an ATM cutting plotter. This structure is now a fully-fledged branch.”
Concurrently, the Albanian structure has also been expanded. “We have also upgraded the Albanian headquarters, now featuring a 600-square-metre warehouse with 35 stable employees, capable of scaling up to 80–90 units based on demand fluctuations, thanks to local contractual flexibility,” Lami explains, underscoring a solid, core production capacity.
The aggressive investment strategy is driven by the imperative to compress lead times. Speed is the paramount requirement today. “The primary operational challenge is sustaining our current service level in an environment where timeframes have been drastically compressed,” Lami confides. While a client might have recently accepted a two-week wait for a sample, current industry logic demands drastic acceleration. “Today, clients require the sample with a maximum two-day turnaround. This forces us to be able to quickly provide the proposal, secure approval, and move to production for the runway show in virtually no time.”
This refined operating model, bolstered by the expanded Italian team, enables “near real-time” management of the sampling process. “We specifically enhanced the Italian site to operate in real time: the client reviews, suggests changes, and within an hour, we can action their requests, effectively functioning as genuine problem-solvers.” Despite the integration of new technological tools, the core of the business remains firmly rooted in manual skill.
“In our sector, human contribution defines 90% of the final outcome; it is a question of artisanal excellence,” Lami stresses. This focus on human proficiency is what continues to ensure the product’s perceived value. “Despite complex market dynamics, weaving maintains its resilience precisely because it is a manual process that inherently elevates the product. We feel this technique is less vulnerable to contractions than other types of processing.” The company provides more than just execution; it offers critical technical consultation: “We provide the essential technical guidance in our field to steer the client, suggesting optimisations for materials and sizing, which allows us to quickly hit the mark, avoiding extra costs and delays.”
International Leather Weavings’ expansion proves that advanced technology is not a substitute for, but rather an accelerant of, craftsmanship. Success is found in the ability to combine the industrial process rigor, ensured by the new assets, with the irreplaceable “human weave” that defines luxury.
