The “Canapol” project: the tanning agent made from hemp extracts
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, Workem, a chemical company based in Santa Croce sull’Arno, Italy, has developed “Canapol,” a revolutionary tanning agent made from hemp extracts. This innovative approach eliminates the need for heavy metals like chromium, zinc, and zirconium, traditionally used in the tanning process. The inspiration behind “Canapol” came from Giacomo Monteverde, owner of Workem, and his father Giuseppe, CEO of the company and a veteran of the tanning industry since 1972.
“It started as a playful experiment,” explains Giacomo Monteverde, “but thanks to my father’s insight, we discovered the perfect formula to create a natural tanning agent using hemp extracts.” Workem utilizes hemp specifically grown for phytoremediation, a process where plants are used to clean up polluted soil. While the fibrous part of the hemp is repurposed for construction and paper production, the seeds are transformed into the bio-based tanning agent. This dual-purpose approach not only yields a sustainable tanning solution but also contributes to land restoration. The “Canapol” project offers significant environmental benefits. By eliminating heavy metals from the tanning process, it drastically reduces the environmental impact of leather production. Additionally, the resulting leather and its waste products are more biodegradable, further minimizing the industry’s ecological footprint.”
Canapol has already earned two prestigious industry certifications: TUV and ZDHC Level 3. After years of experimentation and significant investment, Canapol is poised for launch, and the Monteverde company is receiving inquiries from major international fashion houses, who rely on Santa Croce for its expertise, tradition, and innovation. “More than just a product line,” concludes Giacomo Monteverde, “in our own small way, we can say that we have created a new way of thinking: those who use our natural tanning agents do not have to distort their production process but actually benefit from it.”
Workem is based in Santa Croce sull’Arno: founded in 2019, the company boasts a 3,000 square meter facility and a workforce of 17 employees. It is the first company in which Giacomo Monteverde, a representative of the second generation of tanning entrepreneurs, assumes the role of owner. Workem prides itself on offering “Tailor-Made” packages to its clients. “We find the best solution for the needs of our customers,” as Giacomo and Giuseppe Monteverde proudly emphasize.
Workem’s research has never stopped, leading to the creation of new innovative and cutting-edge products, such as KELTAN 920.
