RE Shoes – a Sustainable Revolution

RE Shoes, a brand by Calzaturificio London, an Italian footwear company with over 50 years of experience, represnts a sustainable revolution in the shoe industry. More than just a shoe manufacturer, RE Shoes has created a virtuous cycle, transforming waste into valuable resources and redefining the concept of eco-conscious footwear. Far from simply adapting to modern trends, the company has anticipated them, placing environmental responsibility at the heart of its business model without compromising the quality of Made in Italy craftsmanship. With RE Shoes, the life cycle of a shoe extends far beyond its final use. The innovation lies in the ability to transform waste into new resources, giving life to eco-compatible footwear with a drastically reduced environmental impact. This circular process contributes to a more responsible economy, involving the consumer in a “Buy, Use, Return” cycle. Once worn, the shoes can be returned and destined to be transformed into something else without becoming mere waste. Transparency and traceability are guaranteed by certifications and external audits, which include the use of non-harmful adhesives and clean energy (obtained from solar panels installed on the company’s roof). Silvia Marzetti, Sales Manager of Calzaturificio London, illustrates the philosophy, objectives, recycling and reuse process, production and social impact that characterize the footwear of the RE Shoes brand.

Is your “eco-friendly” philosophy reflected in every stage of production? Could you illustrate the decision-making process that guides your choices, from the procurement of raw materials to the distribution of the finished product? The RE Shoes project, launched in 2019, embodies our commitment to the environment. For over 15 years, we have operated as a zero-emission company, prioritizing energy conservation and utilizing solar power. RE Shoes are made with water-based adhesives, and we source raw materials – including leather, uppers, and laces – from certified suppliers who share our commitment to recycling and reuse. Even our packaging is crafted from 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard.

How do you guarantee the transparency of your production chain? What certifications or external audits attest to your actual sustainability?
The company undergoes semi-annual and annual audits to ensure compliance with our sustainability standards. We hold ISO 14001 Environmental certification, ISO 9001 quality certification and SA8000 certification, all of which attest to our commitment to responsible practices.

How is the actual environmental impact of your production measured and verified? What are the major challenges encountered in trying to minimize emissions?
Our environmental impact is rigorously monitored through ISO 14001 certification, with regular reporting on water consumption and CO 2 emissions. The installation of solar panels has effectively eliminated our carbon emissions.

What are RE Shoes’ long-term sustainability goals? How do you adapt to future environmental regulations and technological developments in the field of sustainability?
Our primary goal is to remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability. This project embodies our core values, and despite the current challenges in the industry, we are dedicated to promoting RE Shoes and expanding awareness of our mission. We embrace future environmental regulations and technological advancements, and we are prepared to adapt and evolve, as we have always done.

How does the additional cost of sustainable production affect the final price of your shoes? Do you believe that the consumer is willing to pay more for an eco-sustainable product, and how do you communicate this added value?
It’s important to understand that recycling materials and obtaining certifications involve specific processes and procedures that inevitably increase the cost of these materials compared to conventional ones. Remaining true to the essence of “Made in Italy,” our shoes are produced entirely in Italy, specifically in the Marche region. We primarily manufacture on a made-to-order basis, with only a small quantity stocked in our online shop. We believe this approach is both ethical and sustainable. Consequently, the final product prices are higher for those who prioritize cost over value. However, we believe that discerning consumers recognize and appreciate the added value of our sustainable practices.

What recycled materials are used in the production of your RE shoes, and in what percentage? Where do these materials come from, and how is their quality guaranteed?
The leather used in RE shoes is recycled and GRS-certified. It is produced by recompacting leather fibers through a continuous water cycle without harmful adhesives. This process reduces CO 2 emissions by over two-thirds compared to traditional leather production. The upper and lining are made of recycled leather or a sponge composed of 75% recycled, GRS-certified pre-consumer cotton waste. Our laces are also recycled and GRS-certified. The padding consists of high-intensity, breathable latex foam made from recompacted foam waste through an environmentally friendly process. The insoles are made of 30% recycled polyurethane and infused with a delicate fragrance. The soles are made from recycled EVA, natural and recycled rubber from production waste, and a dual-component blend of recycled EVA and TPU. Finally, our shoes are packaged in 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard boxes. The use of these certified, high-quality raw materials ensures the exceptional durability of RE shoes. As a manufacturer of finished products, we source our raw materials externally, relying on our long-standing suppliers who certify and guarantee the sustainability of their materials. We collaborate closely with them to develop increasingly innovative and sustainable products.

Are your shoes completely biodegradable or recyclable at the end of their life cycle? What are the processes envisaged for their disposal, and how do you encourage the return of used shoes?
Purchasing our shoes is an ecological act in itself, as they have already contributed to reducing the impact of industrial waste. However, it’s important to consider that shoes are complex structures made from various micro-materials, which, once assembled, can be challenging to disassemble for proper disposal and recycling. The lifecycle of RE Shoes doesn’t end with the consumer. We encourage our customers to return their worn-out shoes instead of discarding them. We can then utilize these shoes in other sustainable projects, such as grinding them to create mats for athletic tracks or playgrounds.

How do you ensure fair and safe working conditions for your employees? What are your relationships with the local community, and how do you contribute to its development?
Our company is a close-knit community, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. We guarantee fair and safe working conditions for our employees, adhering to the SA8000 ethical certification, a globally recognized standard that recognizes companies committed to sustainable development with a focus on social responsibility. This accreditation reinforces our commitment to social and environmental well-being.

Does the use of local labor contribute to the sustainability of your project? How?
I confirm. We collaborate with partners within the Marche footwear network, which allows us to make our production even more sustainable by minimizing transportation needs and reducing air pollution. Do you cooperate with other companies or organizations to promote sustainability in the footwear sector? We actively collaborate with partners committed to sustainability. We are proud to be featured on APPCYCLED, the digital platform dedicated to selling products made by brands that champion sustainable practices.

What are your future expectations for the RE line and for the expansion of your eco-sustainable footwear production?
As mentioned earlier, we are dedicated to upholding our values through the RE Shoes project and raising awareness about sustainable footwear. We have many exciting developments in the pipeline and are hopeful that our commitment will be recognized and appreciated.

In conclusion, RE Shoes represents an innovative business model that demonstrates how craftsmanship, quality, and environmental sustainability can coexist harmoniously, creating a positive impact on the world. Choosing RE Shoes means investing in a more sustainable future.
