Environment and code of ethics: these are true cornerstones in the corporate policy fostered by Coats Opti, leading brand in the making of zippers for the apparel, footwear and accessories sectors. A thorough commitment that starts off with production facilities. More specifically, the headquarters based in Codroipo (Udine province) – a strategic centre for the development of several domestic and international projects – features a cogeneration plant powered by a single source of primary natural energy, that is, natural gas; in its turn, said plant allows to generate two types of energy, electric and thermal, both used within the processing cycle. Furthermore, the plant has implemented a waste management system that is fully compliant with both the voluntary environmental regulation ISO 14001 and with the mandatory legislation (“Environment Code” Legislative decree 152/2006): a solution fully approved by the group, now part of the programmes for the corporate staff. Last but not least, Coats Opti has joined SISTRI, a waste tracking system that allows to monitor the correct disposal so as to facilitate recycling operations.
The attention to sustainability applies to products as well. Coats Opti is a pioneer in the manufacturing of coiled zippers, made not only with eco-friendly techniques, but also with recycled materials that, in turn, can be further recycled. According to the Italian third party institution ICEA – Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification, Coats Italy successfully meets the requirements set by GRS – Global Recycle Standard: said certification confirms the components used in the articles produced with recycled materials and the compliance with social as well as with environmental parameters throughout the whole manufacturing cycle.
Coiled zippers in recycled polyester belonging to the Coats Opti EcoVerde range
The multinational corporation’s ultimate goal is to succeed in employing, by 2025, solely recycled polyester for the whole range of zippers. In the meantime, the solutions in recycled polyester belonging to the EcoVerde range are currently available on the market. The tape and the coil of the Opti S40 and Opti S60 models are entirely made with yarns derived from the recycling of plastic bottles (PET) proceeding from separate waste collection. Once washed and selected, the bottles are ground to flake. In turn, said fragments undergo a depolymerization process and are turned into the original components (EG and PTA), so as to get a brand-new polyester raw material that can be used in place of the traditional oil-based chips. The recycled raw material is then extruded, stretched and texturized, thus resulting in the perfect yarn for the manufacturing of the EcoVerde zippers.
