GSC Group Spa commitment towards environment consists of a combination of actions addressed at the safety and ecological evaluation of its chemicals, the reduction of hazardous products and development of less impacting processes to serve the leather industry. Besides, the global and new EU perspectives are driving the need to develop new materials of less environmental impacting. The interest in protecting the environment has been steadily and rapidly increasing in favour to the utilisation of natural renewable resources rather than fossil fuels based raw materials. The leather industry has already embraced such enterprise, and is already committed for the reduction of hazardous chemicals and the utilisation of new and renewable substances for the leather processing. Bio-based derivatives are a big character on the market scene and they are gaining remarkable importance for the leather industry, thus becoming more and more impacting and effective in the supply chain of the raw materials. However, it is still quite debatable whether such chemicals might perform equally to their actual fossil-fuels counterparts. GSC provided its perspective on bio-based materials during the III EuroCongress IULTCS which took place in Vicenza in September 2022. The title of the full paper is “GSC Group Perspective Towards the Implementation of Bio-Based Chemicals for Healthy Skin greener technology” and showed how bio-based chemicals can eventually replace fossil fuel derivatives, and provides an overview of the tanning, retanning and finishing processes and the chemicals involved with respect to bio-based content. A correlation between the contents of biological and fossil origin and the performance of the leather was represented with the aim of demonstrating the possibility of producing high quality leather with less impacting chemicals and therefore a more sustainable process.
At Simac Tanning Tech Gsc Group presented some leathers obtained with chemical products and bio-based raw materials enriched.
