JBS Couros, Discover the leather with antivirus technology

JBS Couros
Always motivated to present solutions that meet the world’s needs, JBS Couros, in partnership with Nanox, has developed a leather with antiviral technology to inactivate Covid-19 Virus.

A nanotechnology is intended to inactivate the SARS-Cov-2 virus, which causes Covid-19. Silver microparticles are added to the leather’s coating during the production process. These microparticles are antiviral. The application does not prevent people from contracting the disease, but it does permanently protect the Leather’s surface and stops it from transporting viruses that could otherwise pose a health risk.

The microparticles are created by synthesizing silver salts, which were chosen for their well-known antiviral properties, which are then stabilized using nanotechnology. These microparticles interact, accumulate and penetrate into the protein forming the viral membrane (viruses are contained within a lipoprotein layer), affecting their permeability (ability to breathe). This affects the virus’s DNA, consequently rendering it inactive. Leather that uses this technology is recommended for surfaces that are constantly exposed and therefore more susceptible to viral contact, including furniture, seating and steering wheels. Frequently handled items such as clothing, handbags and wallets can also be made using the same leather.

During tests conducted at the level 3 biosecurity laboratory (NB3) at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICP – USP), the material rendered 99% of SARS-CoV-2 viruses inactive within 30 minutes of coming into contact with the viral particles. The tests complied with the international ISO 21,702 standard, which describes the most effective methods of detecting antiviral activity in plastics and non-porous surfaces.
