Among the first benefit corporations in Europe in the fashion accessories sector, Lampa’s commitment to sustainability stands out in advanced production systems and the use of recycled materials
“The planet is sending precise signals, we can no longer ignore them, every entrepreneur must ask himself what he can do to improve his company and the territory he touches.” This is the advanced vision of Dorino Bertoli, who expresses Lampa’s closeness to sustainability. The family business specialized in the design and production of studs, buttons and accessories for haute couture garments and accessories is among the first benefit corporations in the sector in Europe: the change of company name in 2019 has redefined the business paradigm. Lampa is now led by Mirko and Luca Bertoli who have chosen, right from the foundation, to produce both social and environmental benefits at the same time as achieving their profits. “To obtain and then keep the status of Benefit company – underlines the general manager Mirko Bertoli – selective limitations and unceasing checks and updates are necessary. For example, each year it is necessary to set goals and budgets to improve the quality of the product, the working environment, as well as to show that we are always at the forefront with ground-breaking technologies. Undoubtedly, this choice requires considerable investments, but also a strategy for the future, an incentive for the company. We were forerunners, we understood the importance of such a decision when the attention towards the issues of sustainability, circularity, traceability, transparency was not yet widespread.” Lampa’s attention to the environment consists in 4.0 production processes that reduce waste and consumption, maximizing efficiency and productivity. A photovoltaic system optimizes energy, while a dedicated system manages the recovery and remediation of rainwater, reducing general water consumption from 3,000 to 150 cubic meters per day.
The attitude to look ahead also involves the field of materials. “We only use recycled products from a short supply chain. In addition to our processingscraps, we use plastics deriving from the recovery of automotive waste (for example the ABS of the dashboard) or the nylon of abandoned fishing nets or old carpets. With the B-Corp certification we are committed to fulfilling a series of responsible actions and behaviors, and to make our impact and performance public, respecting the consumer’s right to transparency. Today there is the possibility of making development sustainable and the Italian fashion system must take on this responsibility.”
The commitment to the use of materials deriving from the recycle supply chains has led the Bergamo-based company to get the GRS certification. “The Global Recycle Standard is designed to meet the needs of consumers who want to check for recycled materials in the products they buy,” continues Mirko Bertoli. “It also guarantees socially ethical practices and environmental responsibility aimed above all at the correct use of potentially dangerous chemicals. This is a challenging process that certifies the entire product chain and will lead us to the total traceability of the garment as well as information on its disposal at the end of its life.”
Finally, Lampa also boasts the SA 8000 certification, that is, a management system focused on working conditions aimed at enhancing and protecting all personnel working for the companies that adopt it.
In addition to the headquarters in Grumello del Monte, the Lampa group is made up of the company Fibo, the Med. In Press – which works in the sector of molds for metal die casting and LM2B, specialized in the production of resin cast jewelery. “In the last five years, several companies in the fashion accessories sector have also downsized significantly. Lampa, on the other hand, is clearly against the trend: the company has tripled and keeps on growing in a very demanding market such as that of haute couture.” The ability to fully satisfy the needs and expectations of the customer plays certainly in favor of this trend: even in this period characterized by great difficulties characterized by raw materials shortages, Lampa guarantees delivery in very short times thanks to a well-stocked warehouse, perfect schedule and a double shift work organization.
