Microfilm has marketed a new transfer film, incredibly thin and able to ensure a uniform effect, conceived to markedly reduce the use of finishing chemicals
The determination to overcome difficult circumstances and the will to keep investing in research projects: these two qualities have led to the development, in Microfilm laboratories, of an innovation that, among other things, is set to fully meet quality as well as sustainability requirements concerning leather finishing. The highlight of the latest Lineapelle edition, MicroBase is the new thin transfer film that guarantees a more uniform effect, designed by the firm headquartered in Brendola (Vicenza province) to minimize the use of chemicals during the last leather processing stage, that is, the one aimed at defining the style and sensory aspects. “This new finishing coat base,” explained Ernesto Salvioni, head of laboratory, “is necessary to decrease the spraying layers usually required to make leather’s intrinsic properties uniform, thus intensifying the colour and covering potential flaws.” “It is a product we strongly believe in,” added the firm’s owner, Giuliano Sambugaro, “whose goal is to reduce significantly both processing costs and the volume of emissions in the atmosphere of spray materials. In other words, to lower the pollution caused by either dispersion of said substances or waste.”
MicroBase is a water-based polyurethane film that results in a constant, uniform absorption of colour over the whole surface of leather right from the first coat, the second at most. Therefore, a small quantity of spray material will be more than enough to cover any flaw and the finishing phase will simply end with the application of the fixing agent. “The film’s thickness is infinitesimal (approximately five micrometres, that is, five thousandths of a millimetre).”
Performance-wise, the leathers thus treated are incredibly soft, yet the main benefit, as explained by Salvioni, “lies in the possibility to enhance the quality features of defective leathers, making them aesthetically appealing and reusable, while ensuring a remarkable reduction in terms of costs and finishing products.”
MicroBase has been already tested on leathers for the apparel, accessories and furnishing sectors, and the company is currently waiting for the suitable machinery for the application of the film on large-sized whole hides too.”
