The Congress, hosted by Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) in conjunction with the Ministry of Industry of Ethiopia, was successfully held from 3rd to 5th November, 2021 at the Skylight Hotel.
For the first time in the Union’s 120 years’ experience, the IULTCS Congress was conducted both physically and online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic limitations. The three-day Congress was attended by over 240 participants from numerous countries of all continents. A total of 36 oral and more than 70 panels focused on different areas: technology, tanning chemistry, science of leather making and environmental sustainability.
The Congress was managed by the ALLPI Expert Team, led by Prof. Mekonnen Hailemariam, with the cooperation of 16 renowned scientists, researchers and professional in the leather sector as moderators from across the different continents.
The three days were divided into different sessions. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments, thus elevating the talks.
Day 1 was dedicated to cleaner technologies for the leather processing, composite materials, leather waste resources and environmental management technologies for the leather industry.
Day 2 followed with panels about intelligent manufacturing of leather products, cleaner technologies for the leather processing, leather chemicals, leather industry environmental management technologies and entrepreneurship & progress towards sustainability,
Day 3 was the final day. The topics focused on the areas of scientific researches of leather and fashion, life style leather products and design innovation.
All the speakers expressed their satisfaction in terms of organization, topics’ variety and in-depth analysis of all aspects of the leather making and environmental sustainability.
The online system also facilitated recordings of all presentations and discussion which will be available to registrants for re-watch up to two months’ time period.
Professor Anthony Covington
The Heidemann Lecture was delivered by Professor Anthony Covington, who has authored over 300 technical publications and received the IULTCS Merit Award for Excellence in the Leather Industry in 2009, and the Alsop Award for Outstanding Scientific Contribution to the Leather Industry from the American Leather Chemists Association in 2011.
Dr. Thirumalachari Ramasami
IULTCS 2021 Merit Award for Excellence in the Leather Industry was given to Dr. Thirumalachari Ramasami who is known for his significant contributions to the chemistry of chromium as a scientist and leadership to the Indian leather sector.
