At the Simac Tanning Tech fair in Milan, the Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa)-based company continued to showcase its technology that concerns social and environmental sustainability: a choice that is proving to be a successful one
At Simac Tanning Tech in Milan, Dermacolor srl, based in Castelfranco di Sotto (Pisa), continued to showcase its commitment to social and environmental sustainability. This “green” strategy was once again front and center at the 2024 edition. Dermacolor, specializing in the design and production of chemical products for all phases of leather processing, highlighted its flagship technology, Future White. This commitment to social and environmental sustainability has already proven successful both in Italy and globally. So, it’s no surprise that at the 2024 edition of Simac Tanning Tech, Dermacolor once again showcased its flagship technology, reaffirming a commitment made years ago that continues to deliver winning results. “We’ve been developing Future White for years, and it’s now the go-to system for tanneries seeking ‘biodegradable leather’ certification for wastewater and compost,” explained Andrea Meucci, Technical Manager at Dermacolor. “It allows for the creation of biodegradable and compostable leather, offering a sustainable solution for storing hides without relying on chrome, glutaraldehyde, or other harsh chemicals. It’s a certified tanning system, and this year, we’ve added a fully biodegradable and certified finishing process thanks to a partnership with an American company we partner with and represent in Tuscany. We’re showcasing finished products, including shoes, here at the fair to great success.” Meucci emphasized the performance of these new finishing products. “They deliver a biodegradable system, free of isocyanates, with improved rub fastness, excellent fixing and overall enhanced quality. In the past, biodegradability often meant compromising performance, but this technology achieves both. The market and local authorities are responding positively. Some companies are even investing in collecting leather scraps and trimmings for composting. What was once waste is now a valuable resource.
” Valentina Palagini, General Manager of Dermacolor, added, “There’s no turning back from sustainability. Tanneries are embracing change, though the higher cost compared to traditional methods remains a challenge, especially in the current economic climate where even small savings matter.” Reflecting on Simac Tanning Tech, Palagini said, “We’re very pleased with the turnout. The presence of our agents facilitated interactions with international visitors, though Asian attendance was lower than expected, perhaps due to a similar event recently held in Shanghai. We remain focused on international growth, with exports currently at 30%. We recently appointed a new export manager to further develop our global presence. We see significant potential in markets outside of Italy.”
