Before the election session, the outgoing President Gabriella Marchioni Bocca drew up a balance sheet of the sector: «2019 marked the conclusion of an expansive economic cycle; the current pandemic crisis has acted as a catalyst for the problems occurring in the world economic system. For the first half of 2020, – she stated – all the economic data of our sector are negative, in terms of exports and production, but globally we register the same trend, starting from China, which recorded an amazing loss: -53% in machinery exports and -35% in imports. We as Italy have withstood the blow, recording a more contained loss: -35% in machinery exports and -25% in imports.»
Leather, footwear and leather goods machinery suffer the effects of the first months of the lockdown, but after closing 2019 with a production turnover of 620 million euros and an export share as of 70%, this segment is setting to restart. The ReStart project, developed during the first lockdown, sees the sector beyond the current context, in «a new identity, well rooted in the past and in tradition and at the same time aims to the future with a common, innovative vision projected towards the changing market.»
