TFL and Sun Chemicals celebrate 100 years of Huningue

Huningue's Chemical Production Site in France Turns 100. A Century of Industrial History in Huningue: Sun Chemicals and TFL Celebrate 100 Years of Activity.

In 1924, the company ‘Produits Geigy SA’ began producing dyes in Huningue, starting with grinding, cutting, and typification. Despite being destroyed during World War II, the factory was rebuilt and expanded, changing its name to Ciba-Geigy SA in 1970 and diversifying its activities. In 1996, the production activities were acquired by various companies, including BASF (now Sun Chemicals) and TFL, which have since shared infrastructure and a strong partnership.

To celebrate 100 years of history, Sun Chemicals and TFL organized a two-part event:

  • Friday: Breakfast and roundtable discussion with industrial and institutional figures to discuss the economic and industrial environment, the state of the chemical industry in the region, and future challenges.
  • Saturday: A day dedicated to employees and their families, with site visits, lunch, and activities to share moments of togetherness.

Today, the TFL Huningue plant is a major production center for leather processing intermediates, specializing in the stages from Beamhouse to retanning. With 121 employees involved in production and logistics, in addition to global functions, it represents TFL’s second-largest production unit and its only site in France.

Over the years, investments have enabled significant development in terms of size, production capacity, and process automation. The strategic location near the German and Swiss borders, and the proximity to the Rhine River, make the plant an important logistics hub for products from other group facilities, as well as a major production center.
