Current tensions in intercontinental logistics are driving more and more companies to review their supply chain strategies. Many are implementing short supply chain systems to reduce procurement timing and reliance on China, which also has benefits in terms of quality. This is also happening in the shoe industry, where production has come under strain owing to worldwide shortages in fundamental components, which are also affecting other sectors, most notably the automotive industry. In this specific sector, the most serious issues regard every type of footwear, starting from soles, up to boots and finished shoe. The answer has been to relaunch supply chains in Italy and, generally, in those close to target markets. Wintech, specialized in the manufacture of injection machines for the footwear sector, is moving forward that direction. The line dedicated to the production of EVA soles, sandals, overshoes and boots is in high demand, especially in Europe. “Companies used to rely on the Far East; now they want to buy materials from partners who are closer to home, in order to contain the staggering increase in transport costs,” says Andrea Miotto. Another factor driving the production of EVA soles is that the finished product is so lightweight that it fully responds to the market trend for thick models that can be lifted with just one finger. Technology has done the rest, delivering improvements that have made EVA soles perfect for specialist footwear in segments that were previously out of reach. “Great strides have been made,” Miotto adds, “in the field of safety, because the latest generation of soles meets grip requirements very well. The situation is particularly dynamic throughout Europe.” However, external factors explain only some of Wintech’s results. The company’s own efforts should also be taken into consideration. The hydromechanical system developed for injection and moulding machines saves up to 50% of electricity consumption. Wintech has adopted the same start&stop technology that is widely used in some household appliances and in cars to reduce consumption in urban traffic. The result is more sustainable production, because these machines reduce consumption and are also beneficial to the well-being of workers in the factory, since they operate quietly. Wintech relies on a sales network operating globally, with agents and specialized technicians located in the industrial districts in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Mexico. In Europe, in addition to the headquarters in Mellaredo di Pianiga (Venice), it is present in Poland, Portugal and Russia. In addition, as far as Asia is concerned, a commercial technical office is base both in Japan and Malaysia.
